untitled (2004)

90 min continuous loop, DV - Watch/download excerpt (8MBs)

In their ‘untitled’ Video Painting, NomIg. explores the notion of ambience and expressions of motion (or apparent lack thereof.) In order to create their desired ambience, they have developed techniques which facilitate extreme slow-motion. These techniques include: a process based on the traditional animation model where a single video frame is hand-animating through a series of subtle variations; and a process that they have termed “Slow Morphtion”, which was created to enable extreme slow motion without the inevitable jerkiness which occurs once a digital moving image is slowed down past a certain point. This technique allows the exploration of movement in video at such a slow pace that the moving objects cease to “travel,” but rather each frame (and thus the movement of the object[s]) seems to morph into the other, creating a sense of slow-moving morphology of the original imagery and motion.
